Living costs
International students are required by Migration regulations in Australia to show evidence that they can contribute to the cost of living and studying in Australia, in order to ensure that students are able to make the most of their studies and have a safe and enjoyable experience in Australia. Although students can supplement their income with money earned through part-time work in Australia, the “living costs” requirement ensures that they don’t have to rely on this work to satisfy all of their expenses.
Under the Migration regulations, prospective student’s visa applicants and their family members must have access to the following funds in order to meet the living costs requirements: Prospective students must demonstrate that the funds upon which they are relying will be genuinely available to them while they are in Australia. Cost of living can vary depending on where a student lives in Australia, so prospective students should be prepared in case his or her living costs are greater than those listed here.
1. If applying under SSVF Category:
Proof of funds– Student: The student must have equivalent to one return air fare to the country of Australia. They must also have course fees and approximately $21,300 for the cost of living (rent, food, etc) in order to be considered for a student visa. This may differ depending on where you are living and what school you are attending.
Student’s spouse or partner: If you are married (as many who go into graduate studies are) or are in a committed relationship or civil union, you must also have proof of financial resources for your spouse or partner. They must have the equivalent of one return air fare to the country as well as an extra $8,390 for the overall cost of living. If they are taking classes as well, they must have enough for their own coursework.
Children: If your children are under the age of 6, the first one will add another air fare and $4,000 per year. Any additional children under age 6 will add an additional air fares and $2,790 per child. If your children are over the age of 6, the Department of Immigration and Citizenship will determine a cost based on your child’s age, school level, and the region of Australia that you are residing in
2. If applying under SSVF Category :
You can fulfill the financial requirement by submitting a copy of the receipt for 1st semester / 1st year tuition fee & a copy of an Educational Loan from an Indian Chartered Bank equivalent depends upon program selected.
Once the student gets the study visa, after completing 3 years course, an applicant may get eligible for up to 2 years of open work permit. After completing 1 year of open work permit, Students can apply for permanent residency in Australia through various programs.
